Kodamasimham is a favourite film for both me and Ram Charan – Chiranjeevi

In Megastar Chiranjeevi’s career, Kodamasimham stands out as a unique success in terms of genre. It remains the only cowboy film he ever acted in. Released on August 9, 1990, the film became a huge hit. Now, Rama Films head Kaikala Nageswara Rao is re-releasing the film on the 21st of this month with brand-new 4K conversion and 5.1 digital sound. On this occasion, a press premiere show and press meet were held in Hyderabad. Through a special video, Chiranjeevi recalled his connection with the film.

Chiranjeevi said “The still from Kodamasimham is one of my most popular photos. It’s my favourite. The producers gifted me that framed still because I liked it so much. It still hangs in my house. I’ve always loved cowboy films. I used to watch movies by Clint Eastwood, Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif with great interest. After becoming an actor, I never imagined I’d get a chance to do a cowboy film. At that time, Krishna garu’s Mosagallaku Mosagadu was a blockbuster that broke all records. Attempting such a genre again itself was a big challenge.

Rama Films Nageswara Rao garu and director Muralimohan Rao garu came to me with the story saying they wanted to do a fresh cowboy film with me. I liked the story instantly and agreed. That’s how Kodamasimham happened. This was the first film where I grew a beard to play a role. My favourite character in the film is Sudigali, played by Mohan Babu garu. That role had fun, mischief, villainy everything. No one else could have justified that role the way Mohan Babu did. It was only possible because of him. Legendary Bollywood actor Pran garu played the villain. I was lucky to act alongside him in this film. I also acted with Kaikala Satyanarayana garu, Maruthirao garu, Annapurna, Sonam, Radha and others. Every scene, every song, every action sequence, the horse-riding everything was a highlight. All the songs became super hits. Raj-Koti gave fantastic music. Japam Japam Konga Japam is my favourite song. Prabhudeva did wonderful choreography. I followed his style. There’s a dance movement where I climb from the floor to the wall and back down in one shot. Everyone wondered how we did it. We mounted a camera on a wheeled frame with steps. Hollywood used a similar shot in Inception, but we achieved it much earlier with our own technology.

Kodamasimham is my favourite movie, but it is even more special to Ram Charan. As a child, he wouldn’t eat unless his mother played this film’s cassette. That’s how attached he was to this movie. This is the season of re-releases. By re-releasing Kodamasimham, we want today’s generation to see the cowboy genre we attempted, our dances, our fights, our action sequences, our characterizations,  how films were made back then. My heartfelt congratulations to Nageswara Rao garu of Rama Films for this effort. I sincerely wish the re-release becomes a success. Audiences will definitely enjoy watching it in theatres on the 21st.”

Producer Kaikala Nageswara Rao said “After Chiranjeevi garu gave dates, we wanted to make a film with a character he had never done before. He liked the story and came on board. Even now, he is supporting us for the re-release. Since it is a Chiranjeevi film, we preserved the negative very carefully. Many producers lose the negatives, but we safeguarded ours. Using that preserved negative, we converted it into 4K visuals and 5.1 sound. Prasad Labs worked meticulously. Fortunately, Lanka Bhaskar preserved all the stills of the film. We got them restored with his help.

While doing Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, Chiranjeevi garu was also shooting our film simultaneously, he used to work on multiple films at a time. Though we worried that the beard might disturb other productions, we never asked him to shave. He himself decided that a slight beard would suit the character. That later became the ‘Chiru beard’ trend, followed by many actors.

Cowboy films require a large scale. We shot in five states. With a massive cast including Pran, Kaikala garu, Mohan Babu, Kannada Prabhakar, Ramalingaiah, Radha, Sonam, we made a huge film. Today, such a big film with so many actors would take months, but we completed it in 96 days. Director Muralimohan Rao, my childhood friend, executed the film with perfect planning.

In one version of the story, Sudigali’s character was supposed to die in the second half. When we narrated that to Chiranjeevi garu, he said the second half felt dull. We brought in Paruchuri Brothers to refine the screenplay. They modified it so Sudigali appears throughout the film, adding fun and energy. Satyamand wrote excellent dialogues for Mohan Babu’s character. Raj-Koti’s songs and BGM elevated the film to another level. I request media friends to highlight the high quality with which Kodamasimham is being re-released.”

Director Muralimohan Rao said: “Kodamasimham is a beautiful memory for all of us. The main reason the film came out so well is Chiranjeevi garu. He acted with full dedication. No matter how many days or at what time, he would always be available for shoot. He looked stunning back then and still looks the same today. I’ve watched the ‘Meesaalla Pilla’ song countless times. I will never forget the support from Paruchuri Brothers, Satyamand garu, producer Nageswara Rao garu, and music director Raj-Koti. You all know how big a hit Kodamasimham was back then. I hope the re-release becomes a big success too.”

Writer Satyanand said “Kodamasimham is one of my favourite films. Opportunities to write cowboy films are extremely rare. After Krishna garu’s Mosagallaku Mosagadu, Chiranjeevi garu was the next to do a cowboy film. Much later, Mahesh Babu acted in a cowboy-based movie. Producer Nageswara Rao garu was determined to make Kodamasimham a landmark film in Chiranjeevi garu’s career. Director Muralimohan Rao garu executed it with great dedication.”

Music Director Koti said “It’s exciting to speak at the re-release of Kodamasimham. Raj garu (Raj–Koti) is no longer with us. We loved cowboy films and always wished for an opportunity like this in Telugu. When Chiranjeevi garu came on board, we put our heart into the music. Neither the producer nor the director ever interfered with the sound they trusted us fully. I composed the BGM with total devotion, even wearing Ayyappa mala. Everyone knows the massive success Kodamasimham achieved. I hope you all support the re-release as well.”

Writer Paruchuri Gopalakrishna said “Three months before Kodamasimham released, our Kondaveeti Donga released. This too was an action film. They felt the second half needed more strength, so they called us. Along with Satyamand, Vijayendra Prasad garu, Shivashakti Dutta garu, we worked on the script. Telugu audiences were not very familiar with cowboy films then. But Chiranjeevi garu was absolutely perfect for the role. He performed brilliantly and took the film to another level. It’s a matter of pride that 35 years ago, such casting, story, dialogues, and music were achieved. The re-release feels like a celebration for all of us.”

మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి కెరీర్ లో సక్సెస్, జానర్ పరంగా చూస్తే ఒక ప్రత్యేకమైనదిగా “కొదమసింహం” సినిమాను చెప్పుకోవచ్చు. చిరంజీవి నటించిన ఒకే ఒక కౌబాయ్ సినిమా ఇది. 1990, ఆగస్టు 9న ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకొచ్చి ఘన విజయాన్ని సాధించిన “కొదమసింహం” సినిమాను ఈ నెల 21వ తేదీన 4కే కన్వర్షన్, 5.1 డిజిటల్ సౌండింగ్ తో సరికొత్తగా రమా ఫిలింస్ అధినేత కైకాల నాగేశ్వర రావు రీ రిలీజ్ చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ సందర్భంగా హైదరాబాద్ లో ప్రెస్ ప్రీమయర్ షో, ప్రెస్ మీట్ ఏర్పాటు చేశారు. ఈ ప్రెస్ మీట్ లో స్పెషల్ వీడియో ద్వారా మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి ఈ సినిమాతో తనకున్న అనుబంధాన్ని గుర్తుచేసుకున్నారు.

మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి మాట్లాడుతూ – కొదమసింహం సినిమాలో నా స్టిల్ చాలా పాపులర్. నాకు ఫేవరేట్ ఫొటో అది. నాకు నచ్చిందని ప్రొడ్యూసర్స్ ఆ స్టిల్ ను ఫ్రేమ్ చేసి గిఫ్ట్ గా ఇచ్చారు. మా ఇంట్లో ఇప్పటికీ ఈ ఫొటో ఉంది. నాకు కౌబాయ్ మూవీస్ అంటే ఇష్టం. క్లింట్ ఈస్ట్ వుడ్, గ్రెగరీ పెక్, ఒమర్ షరీఫ్ వంటి స్టార్స్ చేసిన సినిమాలను ఇష్టంగా చూస్తుండేవాడిని. నేను యాక్టర్ అయ్యాక అలాంటి కౌబాయ్ మూవీ వస్తుందని, నేను చేస్తానని ఊహించలేదు. అప్పటికి హీరో కృష్ణ గారు చేసిన మోసగాళ్లకు మోసగాడు పెద్ద హిట్టై అన్ని రికార్డ్స్ బ్రేక్ చేసింది. అలాంటి సినిమా మళ్లీ చేయడం సాహసమే అవుతుంది. రమా ఫిలింస్ నాగేశ్వరరావు గారు కౌబాయ్ కథతో మీతో ఒక కొత్త తరహా మూవీ చేయాలని ఉందని డైరెక్టర్ మురళీ మోహన్ రావు గారితో కలిసి వచ్చి నాకు కథ చెప్పారు. కథ బాగా నచ్చి వెంటనే అంగీకారం తెలిపాను. అలా కొదమసింహం సినిమా మీ ముందుకు వచ్చింది. మొదటిసారి నేను గడ్డం పెంచి నటించిన సినిమా ఇది. ఈ సినిమాలో నాకు నచ్చిన క్యారెక్టర్ మోహన్ బాబు గారు చేసిన సుడిగాలి క్యారెక్టర్. ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ లో ఫన్, జుగుప్స, విలనిజం అన్నీ కలిపి ఉంటాయి. మోహన్ బాబు గారు కాకుండా మరో నటుడైతే ఈ పాత్రను ఇంత బాగా ఒప్పించి మెప్పించి ఉండేవారు కారు. అది మోహన్ బాబు వల్లే సాధ్యమైంది. విలన్ గా బాలీవుడ్ లెజెండరీ నటుడు ప్రాణ్ గారు నటించారు. ఆయనతో కలిసి నటించే అదృష్టం నాకు కొదమసింహం సినిమాతో దక్కింది.  కైకాల సత్యనారాయణ గారు, మారుతీరావు గారు, అన్నపూర్ణ, సోనం, రాధ వీళ్లతో కలిసి నటించాను. వీళ్లతో ప్రతి సీన్, ప్రతి సాంగ్, ప్రతి యాక్షన్, హార్స్ రైడింగ్, ఇవన్నీ హైలైట్స్. ఈ సినిమాలోని అన్ని సాంగ్స్ సూపర్ డూపర్ హిట్ అయ్యాయి. రాజ్ కోటి అంత మంచి సాంగ్స్ ఇచ్చారు. జపం జపం జపం కొంగ జపం పాట నా ఫేవరేట్ సాంగ్. ప్రభుదేవా చక్కటి కొరియోగ్రఫీ చేశాడు. తన స్టైల్ ను ఫాలో అయ్యాను. ఈ పాటలో ఫ్లోర్ నుంచి గోడపైకి స్టెప్స్ వేస్తూ మళ్లీ ఫ్లోర్ మీదకు వచ్చే డ్యాన్స్ మూవ్ మెంట్ ఉంది. ఒకే షాట్ లో ఆ స్టెప్ ఉంటుంది. దీన్ని ఎలా చేశారని అందరూ సర్ ప్రైజ్ అయ్యి అడిగారు. మెట్లున్న ఒక వీల్ కు కెమెరా పెట్టి చేశాం. ఇన్సెప్షన్ అనే హాలీవుడ్ మూవీలో అలాంటి షాట్ చేశారు. మేము ఆ టైమ్ లోనే ఇలాంటి టెక్నాలజీ వాడి ఆ షాట్ చేయగలిగాం. నాకు కొదమసింహం ఫేవరేట్ మూవీ, అయితే నాకంటే రామ్ చరణ్ కు ఈ సినిమా ఇంకా ఎక్కువ ఇష్టం. చిన్నప్పుడు తను వాళ్ల అమ్మ ఈ సినిమా క్యాసెట్ పెడితే గానీ భోజనం చేసేవాడు కాదు. అంతగా చరణ్ కు ఇష్టమైన సినిమా ఇది. రీ రిలీజ్ ల టైమ్ ఇది. ఈ జెనరేషన్ ప్రేక్షకులకు కూడా మనం చేసిన కౌబాయ్ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది, మన డ్యాన్సెస్, మన ఫైట్స్, మన యాక్షన్ సీక్వెన్సులు ఎలా ఉన్నాయి మన క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్స్…అప్పట్లో ఎలా తీశారు అని తెలియజేసే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్నందుకు రమా ఫిలింస్ నాగేశ్వరరావు గారికి నా హృదయపూర్వక అభినందనలు తెలియజేస్తున్నా. వారి ప్రయత్నం సక్సెస్ కావాలని కోరుకుంటున్నా. ప్రేక్షకులు ఈ సినిమాను తప్పకుండా ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తారు. థియేటర్స్ లో ఈ నెల 21 చూడండి. అన్నారు.

నిర్మాత కైకాల నాగేశ్వరరావు మాట్లాడుతూ – చిరంజీవి గారు డేట్స్ ఇచ్చాక ఆయన ఇప్పటిదాకా చేయని క్యారెక్టర్ తో సినిమా నిర్మించాలని ప్లాన్ చేశాం. ఈ కథ ఆయనకు బాగా నచ్చి సినిమా చేసేందుకు ముందుకొచ్చారు. ఇప్పుడు రీ రిలీజ్ సందర్భంగా కూడా మాకు ఆయన సపోర్ట్ అందిస్తున్నందుకు సంతోషంగా ఉంది. చిరంజీవి గారితో చేసిన సినిమా కాబట్టి “కొదమసింహం” నెగిటివ్ ను భద్రంగా దాచిపెట్టాం. చాలా మంది నిర్మాతలు నెగిటివ్ పోగొట్టుకుంటారు. మేము భద్రపరచుకున్న నెగిటివ్ నుంచి 4కె విజువల్ కన్వర్షన్, 5.1 సౌండ్ చేయించాం. ప్రసాద్ ల్యాబ్స్ వాళ్లు ఎంతో శ్రద్ధగా ఆ వర్క్ అంతా చేశారు. మా అదృష్టవశాత్తూ లంకా భాస్కర్ ఈ సినిమా స్టిల్స్ ను భద్రపరిచారు. ఆయనతో మాట్లాడి ఆ స్టిల్స్ తెప్పించుకున్నా. చిరంజీవి గారు ఒకవైపు జగదేకవీరుడు అతిలోక సుందరి సినిమా చేస్తూనే మరోవైపు మా మూవీలో నటించారు. ఆయన ఒకేసారి రెండు మూడు సినిమాల్లో నటించేవారు. వేరే సినిమాలు డిస్ట్రబ్ అవుతాయని గడ్డం లేకుండా నటించమని మేము అడగలేదు. అయితే ఆయనే ఈ మూవీకి కాస్త గడ్డం ఉండాలని చిన్న గడ్డంతో నటించారు. ఆ తర్వాత అది చిరుగడ్డం అనే ట్రెండ్ గా మారింది. చాలా మంది హీరోలు ఆ తర్వాత చిరు గడ్డంతో నటించారు.   కౌబాయ్ సినిమాలంటే పెద్ద స్కేల్ లో చేయాల్సిఉంటుంది. ఈ సినిమాను 5 రాష్ట్రాల్లో షూటింగ్ చేశాం. ప్రాణ్, కైకాల గారు, మోహన్ బాబు, కన్నడ ప్రభాకర్, రామలింగయ్య గారు, రాధ, సోనం..ఇలా చాలా పెద్ద కాస్టింగ్ తో రూపొందించాం. ఇంత భారీ సినిమాను, ఇంతమంది ఆర్టిస్టుల కాంబినేషన్ తో ఇప్పుడైతే ఎన్ని రోజులు చేస్తారో తెలియదు గానీ మేము 96 రోజుల్లో చిత్రీకరించాం. దర్శకుడు మురళీ మోహన్ రావు నా చిన్ననాటి స్నేహితుడు. పక్కా స్క్రిప్ట్ తో మంచి ప్లానింగ్ తో ఈ సినిమాను రూపొందించాడు. “కొదమసింహం” కథలో మేము అనుకున్న ఒక వెర్షన్ లో సెకండాఫ్ కే సుడిగాలి క్యారెక్టర్ చనిపోతుంది. చిరంజీవి గారికి చెబితే సెకండాఫ్ డ్రై గా ఉంది అని, పరుచూరి సోదరులను పిలిపించి స్క్రీన్ ప్లే యాడ్ చేయించారు. అలా సుడిగాలి క్యారెక్టర్ సినిమా అంతా ఉంటూ ఫన్ అందిస్తూ వెళ్లింది. మోహన్ బాబు చేసిన ఆ పాత్రకు సత్యానంద్ మంచి డైలాగ్స్ రాశారు. రాజ్ కోటి సూపర్ హిట్ సాంగ్స్ తో పాటు అందించిన బీజీఎం మూవీని మరో స్థాయికి తీసుకెళ్లింది. ఈ సినిమా ఎంత మంచి క్వాలిటీతో రీ రిలీజ్ అవుతోంది అనేది మీడియా మిత్రులు హైలైట్ చేయాలని కోరుతున్నా. అన్నారు.

డైరెక్టర్ మురళీమోహన్  రావు మాట్లాడుతూ – “కొదమసింహం” సినిమా మా అందరికీ ఒక గొప్ప మెమొరీ. ఈ సినిమా అంత బాగా రావడానికి ముఖ్య కారణం చిరంజీవి గారు. ఆయన ఎంతో డెడికేషన్ తో ఈ సినిమాలో నటించారు. ఎన్ని రోజులంటే అన్ని రోజులు, ఎప్పుడు షూటింగ్ అంటే అప్పుడు షూటింగ్ కు వచ్చేవారు. చిరంజీవి గారు అప్పుడు ఎలా ఉన్నారో ఇప్పుడూ అంతే అందంగా ఉన్నారు. ఆయన మీసాల పిల్ల సాంగ్ ను ఎన్నిసార్లు చూస్తున్నానో తెలియదు. “కొదమసింహం” సినిమాకు పరుచూరి సోదరులు, సత్యానంద్, మా ప్రొడ్యూసర్ నాగేశ్వరరావు, మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ రాజ్ కోటి..వీళ్లంతా అందించిన సపోర్ట్ మర్చిపోలేను. “కొదమసింహం” అప్పట్లో ఎంత పెద్ద హిట్ అయ్యిందో మీకు తెలుసు. ఈ రీ రిలీజ్ ను కూడా విజయవంతం చేస్తారని కోరుకుంటున్నా. అన్నారు.

రైటర్ సత్యానంద్ మాట్లాడుతూ – నాకు చాలా ఇష్టమైన మూవీ “కొదమసింహం”. కౌబాయ్ సినిమాకు రాసే అవకాశం అరుదుగా వస్తుంటుంది. అప్పట్లో కృష్ణ గారు ఎంతో శ్రమకోర్చి మోసగాళ్లుకు మోసగాడు చేశారు. ఆ తర్వాత చిరంజీవి గారు కౌబాయ్ మూవీ చేశారు. చిరంజీవి గారు ఈ సినిమా చేసేప్పటికి ఒక్క కృష్ణ గారి కౌబాయ్ మూవీనే ఉంది. చాలా కాలానికి మహేశ్ బాబు కౌబాయ్ సినిమాలో నటించారు. చిరంజీవి గారి కెరీర్ లో ప్రత్యేకమైన గర్తుండిపోయే సినిమా కావాలని నిర్మాత నాగేశ్వరరావు గారు ఎంతో పట్టుదలగా సినిమా నిర్మించారు. మురళీ మోహన్ రావు గారు అంతే శ్రద్ధగా రూపొందించారు. అన్నారు.

మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ కోటి మాట్లాడుతూ – “కొదమసింహం” రీ రిలీజ్ సందర్భంగా మాట్లాడటం ఎగ్జైటింగ్ గా ఉంది. మా రాజ్ ఇప్పుడు మన మధ్య లేడు. మాకు కౌబాయ్ సినిమాలంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. అలాంటి ఒక మూవీ తెలుగులో అవకాశం వస్తే బాగుండును అనుకునేవాళ్లం. అలాంటి టైమ్ లో చిరంజీవి గారు హీరోగా ఈ మూవీ అవకాశం వచ్చింది. చాలా ప్యాషన్ తో ఈ సినిమాకు మ్యూజిక్ చేశాం. మ్యూజిక్ ఇలా చేయండి, అలా చేయండి అని ఏ రోజూ మాకు ప్రొడ్యూసర్, డైరెక్టర్ చెప్పలేదు. పూర్తిగా మాపై నమ్మకాన్ని ఉంచారు. మేము ఛాలెంజింగ్ గా తీసుకుని చేశాం. బీజీఎం అయితే అయ్యప్ప మాల వేసుకుని నిష్టగా చేశాను. “కొదమసింహం” ఎంత గొప్ప విజయం సాధించిందో తెలుసు. రీ రిలీజ్ కు కూడా మీ సపోర్ట్ ఇస్తారని కోరుకుంటున్నా. అన్నారు.

రైటర్ పరుచూరి గోపాలకృష్ణ మాట్లాడుతూ – ఈ సినిమా రిలీజ్ కు మూడు నెలల ముందే మా కొండవీటి దొంగ రిలీజ్ అయ్యింది. ఇదీ యాక్షన్ మూవీనే. సెకండాఫ్ లో కొంత వెలితి ఉందని మమ్మల్ని పిలిచారు. మేము, సత్యానంద్, విజయేంద్రప్రసాద్ గారు, శివశక్తి దత్తా ఈ సినిమాకు స్క్రిప్ట్ కు వర్క్ చేశారు. మన ఆడియెన్స్ కు కౌబాయ్ సినిమాల పరిచయం చాలా తక్కువ. చిరంజీవి గారు ఈ సినిమాకు వెయ్యి శాతం కరెక్ట్ . ఆయన ఈ పాత్రలో అద్భుతంగా నటించి మరో స్థాయికి సినిమాను తీసుకెళ్లారు. 35 ఏళ్ల క్రితమే ఇంత మంచి కాస్టింగ్, కథా కథనాలు, డైలాగ్స్, సంగీతంతో సినిమా వచ్చిందంటే మనమంతా గర్వపడాలి. “కొదమసింహం” రీ రిలీజ్ మాకోసం కూడా జరుగుతోందా అనేంత సంతోషంగా ఉంది. అన్నారు.
