Annagaru Vostaru blends vintage mass-commercial style with a fresh presentation – Hero Karthi
Star hero Karthi’s much-awaited film “Annagaru Vostaru” is all set for a grand worldwide theatrical release on the 12th of this month. Produced by K.E. Gnanavel Raja under the prestigious Studio Green banner and directed by Nalan Kumaraswamy, the film is designed as a new-age action-comedy entertainer. Krithi Shetty plays the female lead. In today’s interview, Karthi shared several interesting highlights about the movie.
– “The reason I agreed to do Annagaru Vostaru is director Nalan Kumaraswamy. His film Soodhu Kavvum has a cult following. Even the directors who attended yesterday’s pre-release event spoke about how iconic that film was.
– After eight years, Nalan is returning with this project. Usually, when directors stay away from films, people forget them, but in Nalan’s case, audiences were waiting for his comeback.
– We often think of superheroes as Batman or Superman, but in our culture, legends like NTR and MGR were true superheroes. They transformed cinema and politics. With that thought, Nalan imagined a story that revisits the 80s mass-commercial mania in a fresh way. The film takes place in a fictional world.”
– “For me, Annagaru Vostaru is a risky attempt. I can easily do films like Oopiri, but this film is an exciting challenge.
New types of films emerge only when writers are given complete creative freedom. Otherwise, the industry keeps repeating the same formula.
Nalan has presented this film with visuals and music comparable to something like Avengers. That’s why this film has been thrilling to work on.”
– “Hero, songs, villain, fights… this structure exists only in our industry. Perfect mass-commercial cinema happened in the 80s and 90s.
– In our films, even during a serious narrative, we place a song to relax the audience and then pull them back into the story, this rhythm exists only here. Annagaru Vostaru follows that classic structure but is presented in a modern style.
– It is not a period film. I never watched the legendary actors’ films in theatres, but our parents always spoke about them. Even today, their photos are displayed in many households, people treat them like deities.”
– “I always try to pick fresh stories. As an actor, my identity comes from my script choices. There were many crossovers between NTR and MGR Tamil films remade in Telugu and Telugu films remade in Tamil creating interesting parallels in their careers.
You will notice subtle references to these parallels in Annagaru Vostaru. Though Nalan’s earlier films had multiple characters and tragic endings, this one is a hero-centric film.”
– “As shown in the trailer, this is a superhero story set in a parallel world.
I play a police officer who wears a safari uniform, and there’s even a scene where I explain this to a judge, one of Nalan’s quirky ideas.I have portrayed intense police roles earlier, but here the cop character is designed in a completely different tone.
The dialogues have a rhythmic flow, and even the music is treated differently.”
– Nalan introduced Santhosh Narayanan to cinema. For this project, he initially considered another composer, but Santosh himself came forward and said, ‘I want to do this film,’ and joined the team.
– Krithi Shetty has performed beautifully. She appears as a spirit reader and prepared thoroughly for the role. From the very first scene, I felt she acted exceptionally well.
Heroines often get restricted to glamour, but Krithi sincerely puts in effort to be recognized as a strong performer. She wants to be known for acting, not just for dance or glamour.”
– I believe in teamwork. We discuss scenes with the director even moments before shooting. I contribute suggestions because once I’m absorbed into a character, I understand how he should speak or behave.
– Producer Gnanavel Raja has given massive support. Whatever the film required, he ensured it was provided.Creating the new world of Annagaru Vostaru was possible because of his backing.”
– Whenever someone attempts a new type of film, we must support them.
Otherwise, filmmakers hesitate to take bold decisions. If a film like Satyam Shivam Sundaram hadn’t been appreciated, would anyone dare to make something similar again?
– Iam happy that Akhanda 2 has been confirmed, I’m eagerly waiting for it.
I’ve always admired K. Viswanath garu’s films the emotions and character portrayals in his work are timeless.”

– నేను ఈ సినిమాలో నటించేందుకు కారణం డైరెక్టర్ నలన్ కుమారస్వామి. ఆయన సూదు కవ్వమ్ సినిమాకు ఎంతోమంది ఫ్యాన్స్ ఉన్నారు. నిన్న ప్రీ రిలీజ్ ఈవెంట్ కు గెస్ట్ గా వచ్చిన డైరెక్టర్స్ అంతా ఆ మూవీ గురించి చెప్పారు. అలాంటి డైరెక్టర్ 8 ఏళ్ల తర్వాత చేస్తున్న చిత్రమిది. సినిమాలు చేయకుంటే వాళ్లను మర్చిపోతాం. కానీ నలన్ సినిమా కోసం వెయిట్ చేస్తున్నారు. మనం సూపర్ హీరో అంటే బ్యాట్ మ్యాన్, సూపర్ మ్యాన్ అనే అనుకుంటాం కానీ మన కల్చర్ లోనూ ఎన్టీఆర్ ఎంజీఆర్ లాంటి సూపర్ హీరోస్ ఉన్నారు. వాళ్లు మన సినిమాను, పాలిటిక్స్ ను మార్చేశారు. అలాంటి సూపర్ హీరో తిరిగి వస్తే ఎలా ఉంటుందనే ఆలోచనతో 80వ దశకంలో మాస్ కమర్షియల్ సినిమా మేనియాను మరోసారి గుర్తుచేసేలా ఈ సినిమా ఉంటుంది. ఈ మూవీ స్టోరీ ఒక కాల్పనిక ప్రపంచంలో జరుగుతుంటుంది.
– నా వరకు చెప్పాలంటే ఇది రిస్కీ ప్రయత్నం. నేను ఊపిరి లాంటి మూవీస్ ఈజీగా చేయగలను కానీ అన్నగారు వస్తారు ఒక ఛాలెంజింగ్ ఫిల్మ్. అయితే రైటర్స్ కు స్వేచ్ఛ ఇచ్చినప్పుడే కొత్త తరహా సినిమాలు వస్తాయి. లేకుంటే ఎప్పుడూ ఒకే తరహా మూవీస్ చేయాల్సివస్తుంది. అవేంజర్స్ లాంటి విజువల్స్, మ్యూజిక్ తో ఈ సినిమాను నలన్ కొత్తగా ప్రెజెంట్ చేశాడు. అందుకే అన్నగారు వస్తారు మూవీ చేయడం ఎగ్జైటింగ్ గా ఉంది.
– హీరో, సాంగ్స్, విలన్, ఫైట్స్..ఇలాంటి ఒక స్ట్రక్చర్ ఉన్న సినిమాలు మన దగ్గరే ఉన్నాయి. ప్రపంచంలో మరెక్కడా ఇలాంటి సినిమాలను చూడం. ఆ పర్పెక్ట్ మాస్ కమర్షయిల్ మూవీస్ 80, 90 దశకాల్లోనే వచ్చాయి. సీరియస్ గా కథ జరుగుతున్నప్పుడు మన సినిమాల్లో ఒక పాట పెడతాం, ఆడియెన్స్ ను రిలాక్స్ చేసి మళ్లీ కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్తాం. అది మన సినిమాకే సాధ్యం. అలాంటి స్ట్రక్చర్ కథతో కొత్త మోడరన్ ప్రెజెంటేషన్ తో ఈ సినిమా ఉంటుంది. ఇది పీరియాడిక్ మూవీ కాదు. నిన్నటితరం లెజెండరీ హీరోల సినిమాలు నేను థియేటర్స్ లో చూడలేదు గానీ మా పేరెంట్స్ చెప్పేవారు. ఆ దిగ్గజ నటుల ఫొటోస్ ఇప్పటికే చాలామంది ప్రేక్షకుల ఇళ్లలో ఉంటాయి. వాళ్లను దేవుళ్లలా చూస్తారు.
– కథల పరంగా కొత్తగా సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకోవాలనే ప్రయత్నం నిత్యం చేస్తుంటాను. నటుడిగా నాకు ప్రత్యేకత తీసుకొచ్చేది నా స్క్రిప్ట్ సెలెక్షనే. ఎన్టీఆర్, ఎంజీఆర్ ఇద్దరి కెరీర్స్ లో అక్కడి సినిమాలు ఇక్కడ ఇక్కడి సినిమాలు అక్కడ రీమేక్స్ జరిగాయి. ఈ క్రాసోవర్ వల్ల ఈ ఇద్దరు మహా నటుల కెరీర్ లో ఎన్నో పోలికలు కనిపిస్తాయి. అవి మా సినిమాలోనూ చూస్తారు. డైరెక్టర్ నలన్ గత సినిమాలు శాడ్ ఎండింగ్ తో ఉంటాయి. చాలా క్యారెక్టర్స్ కనిపిస్తాయి. ఈ సినిమా మాత్రం హీరో సెంట్రిక్ గా ఉంటుంది. మా ప్రీ రిలీజ్ ఈవెంట్ కు గెస్ట్ లుగా వచ్చిన దర్శకుల్లో చాలామందిని పర్సనల్ గా నేను కలిశాను. వాళ్లు నాపై చూపిస్తున్న అభిమానానికి థ్యాంక్స్ చెబుతున్నా. నాకు కూడా వారిపై అలాంటి గౌరవమే ఉంది.
– మీరు ట్రైలర్ లో చూసి ఉంటారు. పారలల్ వరల్డ్ లో జరిగే సూపర్ హీరో సినిమా ఇది. పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్ గా సఫారీ డ్రెస్ వేసుకుంటాను. ఆ విషయం జడ్జితో చెబుతాను. దర్శకుడు నలన్ చూపించిన కొత్తదనం ఇది. నేను గతంలో సీరియస్, పవర్ ఫుల్ పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్స్ క్యారెక్టర్స్ చేశాను. అన్నగారు వస్తారులో పోలీస్ పాత్ర అయినా దర్శకుడు డిఫరెంట్ గా డిజైన్ చేశారు. నలన్ మాతో చెప్పించే డైలాగ్స్ కూడా ఒక రిథమ్ తో ఉంటాయి. మ్యూజిక్ కూడా కొత్తగా చేయిస్తాడు. సంతోష్ నారాయణన్ ను ఇంట్రడ్యూస్ చేసింది నలన్ కుమారస్వామి. అయితే ఈ సినిమాకు నలన్ వేరే మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ ను అనుకున్నాడు. కానీ సంతోష్ వచ్చి నేనే వర్క్ చేస్తా అని అడిగి మరీ మూవీకి జాయిన్ అయ్యాడు.
– హీరోయిన్ కృతిశెట్టి ఆకట్టుకునేలా నటించింది. స్పిరిట్ రీడర్ లా ఆమె కనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ పాత్ర కోసం రీసెర్చ్ చేసి, ప్రిపరేషన్ తో పర్ ఫార్మ్ చేసింది. ఫస్ట్ సీన్ చూసి నేను ఎంత బాగా నటిస్తుంది అనుకున్నా. హీరోయిన్ అంటే కొన్నిసార్లు గ్లామర్ డాల్ లా ఉండాల్సివస్తుంది. కానీ కృతి నటిగా ఎఫర్ట్స్ పెట్టింది. ఆమె డ్యాన్సులు, గ్లామర్ కాకుండా మంచి యాక్టర్ లా పేరు తెచ్చుకోవాలని సిన్సియర్ గా ప్రయత్నిస్తోంది.
– నేను టీమ్ వర్క్ ను బిలీవ్ చేస్తాను. దర్శకుడితో కలిసి స్క్రిప్ట్ గురించి డిస్కషన్స్ చేసుకుంటాం. సెట్ లో సీన్ చేసే ముందు కూడా మాట్లాడుకుంటాం. నాకు అనిపించిన సజెషన్స్ చెబుతాను. నేను క్యారెక్టర్ లో ఉండిపోతాను కాబట్టి ఆ పాత్ర ఎలా మాట్లాడితే బాగుంటుంది అనేది ఒక ఐడియా ఉంటుంది. నావంతు కాంట్రిబ్యూషన్ తప్పకుండా చేస్తుంటా. ప్రొడ్యూసర్ జ్ఞానవేల్ గారు ఈ సినిమా కోసం ఎంతో ఎఫర్ట్స్ పెట్టారు. మూవీకి ఏం కావాలన్నా చేశారు. అన్నగారు వస్తారులో కొత్త వరల్డ్ క్రియేట్ చేశామంటే అందుకు జ్ఞానవేల్ రాజా ఇచ్చిన సపోర్ట్ కారణం. ఒకవారం రెండు మూడు సినిమాలు వచ్చినా తప్పులేదు. ప్రేక్షకులు ఒక మూవీ తర్వాత మరొక మూవీ చూస్తారు. నేనూ ఒక ఆడియెన్ గా అలాగే చూసేవాడిని. ఏ సినిమా చూసే ఆడియెన్స్ ఆ సినిమాకు ఉంటారు.
– ఎవరు కొత్త తరహా సినిమా చేసినా కనీసం మన వంతు ప్రోత్సాహం అందించాలి. లేకుంటే కొత్తగా ప్రయత్నించేవారు ముందడుగు వేయలేరు. సత్యం సుందరం లాంటి సినిమాను ఒకవేళ ప్రేక్షకులు ఆదరించకుంటే మరోసారి అలాంటి సినిమా చేసే ప్రయత్నమే ఎవరు చేయరు కదా. అఖండ 2 రిలీజ్ కన్ఫమ్ కావడం హ్యాపీగా ఉంది. ఆ సినిమా కోసం నేను కూడా వెయిట్ చేస్తున్నా. కె విశ్వనాథ్ గారి సినిమాలంటే నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం. ఆయన సినిమాల్లోని భావోద్వేగాలు, పాత్రల చిత్రణ అద్భుతంగా ఉంటాయి. విశ్వనాథ్ గారి సినిమాలు ఎప్పుడు చూసినా మనల్ని ఎంగేజ్ చేస్తుంటాయి.
