Chennai Love Story Became a ₹50 Crore Grosser – Sai Rajesh

Sai Rajesh, who has carved a unique identity as a story writer, director and producer with films like Hrudaya Kaleyam, Kobbarimatta, Colour Photo and Baby, is celebrating the grand success of his latest production Chennai Love Story. The film, for which he provided the story and co-produced with SKN, has crossed the ₹50 crore mark at the box office and continues its successful run in its second week. Speaking at a media interaction today, Sai Rajesh shared several interesting insights about the film, his journey and his future projects.

“During Hrudaya Kaleyam and Kobbarimatta, I used the name Steven Shankar as my director’s name. ‘Steven’ came from Steven Spielberg and ‘Shankar’ from director Shankar. At that time, I felt I needed a unique name for publicity as a director. Later, during Colour Photo, I decided that I should continue my career with the name my parents gave me, so I changed my credits back to Sai Rajesh. Just when I thought people had forgotten the name Steven Shankar, we named Kiran Abbavaram’s character Steven Shankar in Chennai Love Story. I think that name will now stay with audiences for some more time.”

“I never intended to direct Chennai Love Story. I was busy directing the Hindi remake of Baby, and that project got delayed. At the same time, the music sittings for this film were also happening. I wanted to continue producing films even if my next directorial took time, so we started this project with Ravi as the director.”

“Watching audience reactions during premiere shows is always nerve-wracking. During Colour Photo, Baby and Chennai Love Story, there were moments where we expected audiences to become emotional, but instead they remained silent because they were shocked. That silence made me nervous. Usually, audiences take two or three days to completely absorb the content. I spend nearly two years working on every film, so if the result isn’t what I expect, it takes me time to accept it.”

“For the first two days, Chennai Love Story faced a lot of negative campaigning on social media. There were even claims that people were walking out of theatres. But if audiences had really rejected the film, it wouldn’t have collected over ₹50 crore. After Baby, some people criticized Vaishnavi’s character and felt Viraj’s role lacked clarity. However, with Chennai Love Story, there wasn’t any significant criticism of either Kiran’s or Gouri’s characters. The only challenge was that the shoot took longer than expected.”

“Once I saw certain scenes during the shoot, I realised Ravi didn’t need my involvement as a director. I felt my contribution was only needed during the music stage. After watching the interval sequence, I genuinely felt he had made the film even better than I would have. We released Chennai Love Story with complete confidence. While it takes time for producers to receive their actual theatrical returns, on paper we are currently in a profitable position.”

“From a story perspective, this film has given me even more satisfaction than Colour Photo and Baby. Very few films with this kind of narrative have been made. I’m delighted that audiences have embraced a story filled with shocking emotional moments. Some scenes in the film are my tribute to Mouna Ragam. Stories like these come from real life. Emotional love stories can only be written after experiencing pain in life. I have gone through pain too, though my own love story had a happy ending. Except for the final 30 minutes, Colour Photo was almost scene-to-scene based on my intermediate college life. I still have another love story that I dream of making. Once I complete that, I’ll explore other genres.”

“I don’t know whether it was intentional or not, but our film faced heavy negativity on social media. We responded by aggressively promoting the positive reactions from audiences who loved the film. We worked hard to counter the negativity, and eventually, we succeeded.”

“When I started my career as a director, the industry functioned very differently. Audiences were mainly interested in films featuring stars or backed by big production houses. It was difficult for newcomers to survive. That’s why I deliberately created controversy with Hrudaya Kaleyam so people would talk about it. If audiences had embraced content-oriented films the way they do today, I would have begun my journey with Colour Photo. Even back then, I already had the story ideas for Colour Photo and Baby.”

“We didn’t make any changes to Chennai Love Story after its release. We only made some level adjustments to the second half. It’s true that there’s been a gap in my directorial career, but that’s because I’ve been busy with the Hindi remake of Baby. At present, I’m happy and satisfied as a writer and producer. If I find a director who can do justice to my stories, I’m more than happy to give them the opportunity. That benefits me as a producer while ensuring the audience gets a good film. We had initially approached veteran filmmaker Bhagyaraj for one of the roles. I even spoke to him personally, but due to date issues, he couldn’t do it. I still wish we had worked together.”

“Every filmmaker dreams of working with legendary composers like Ilaiyaraaja, Keeravani and Mani Sharma. Mani Sharma garu and I are both huge admirers of Ilaiyaraaja. We spent an entire day listening to Ilaiyaraaja’s songs and decided we wanted to create that kind of musical magic for our film. Mani Sharma was happy with my understanding of Ilaiyaraaja’s music.”

“Baby was the biggest test of my identity as a director. If that film hadn’t succeeded, neither I nor Chennai Love Story would exist today. Baby is emotionally very special to all of us. At that point in my career, it erased all doubts about whether Sai Rajesh could succeed as a director.”

“The Hindi remake of Baby has around 20 days of shooting left. We plan to complete filming by the end of September. While the Telugu version had softer characterizations, the Hindi version features more aggressive characters. As a writer, you must absorb emotional pain. As a director, you have to work even harder. Having friends like SKN and Dheeraj makes production much easier. We hoped Chennai Love Story would touch the ₹50 crore mark, and the audience fulfilled that expectation.”

“Megastar Chiranjeevi garu personally messaged me after the film’s success. He congratulated me for delivering another ₹50 crore grosser and said he was proud to see one of his admirers achieve such success. That message made me extremely happy. Allu Arjun garu is expected to watch our film this week. I previously served as Vice President of the Directors’ Association and currently serve as its Treasurer. I was also recently elected unanimously as the Vice President of the Film Federation. I consider these positions a responsibility, and we’re working towards securing agreements with producers regarding minimum wages for film workers. As the Federation’s Vice President, I will always work in the best interests of the workers.”

“I deeply admire writers like Mullapudi Venkata Ramana and Yandamuri Veerendranath. The grey-shaded characters in K. Balachander’s films have always fascinated me. After October this year, I will officially announce my next Telugu directorial.”

కొబ్బరిమట్ట, హృదయకాలేయం, కలర్ ఫొటో, బేబి వంటి చిత్రాలతో స్టోరీ రైటర్ గా, డైరెక్టర్ గా, ప్రొడ్యూసర్ గా తనకంటూ ఓ ప్రత్యేకమైన బ్రాండ్ క్రియేట్ చేసుకున్నారు సాయి రాజేష్. ఆయన కథను అందించి ప్రొడ్యూసర్ ఎస్ కేఎన్ తో కలిసి నిర్మించిన తాజా చిత్రం “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” ప్రేక్షకాదరణతో ఘన విజయాన్ని సొంతం చేసుకుంది. బాక్సాఫీస్ వద్ద 50 కోట్ల రూపాయల వసూళ్లను దాటి రెండో వారంలోనూ విజయవంతంగా ప్రదర్శితమవుతోంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో ఈ రోజు జరిగిన ఇంటర్వ్యూలో “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” సినిమా విజయం పట్ల సంతోషాన్ని వ్యక్తం చేశారు సాయి రాజేష్.

– హృదయకాలేయం , కొబ్బరిమట్ట సినిమాల సమయంలో డైరెక్టర్ గా నా పేరు స్టీవెన్ శంకర్ అని పెట్టుకున్నా. స్టీవెన్ స్పీల్ బర్గ్ లోని స్టీవెన్, శంకర్ లోని శంకర్ తీసుకున్నదే స్టీవెన్ శంకర్. దర్శకుడిగా ప్రచార కార్యక్రమాల్లో నేను బయటకు వచ్చి మాట్లాడాల్సిన అవసరం ఎంతైనా ఉండేది. అమ్మా నాన్నలు పెట్టుకున్న పేరుతోనే మన కెరీర్ కొనసాగించాలి అని అనుకుని కలర్ ఫొటో టైమ్ లో సాయి రాజేష్ గా క్రెడిట్స్ లో పేరు వేసుకున్నాను. ప్రేక్షకులు స్టీవెన్ శంకర్ అనే పేరును మర్చిపోయారా అనుకునే టైమ్ లో మా “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” సినిమాలో హీరో కిరణ్ క్యారెక్టర్ కు స్టీవెన్ శంకర్ అని పెట్టుకోవడం కలిసొచ్చింది. దీంతో ఇంకొంతకాలం ప్రేక్షకులు స్టీవెన్ శంకర్ పేరు గుర్తుపెట్టుకుంటారు.

– “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” సినిమాకు నేను దర్శకత్వం వహించాలనే ఉద్దేశం లేదు. ఎందుకంటే నేను డైరెక్టర్ గా బేబి సినిమా హిందీ రీమేక్ వర్క్స్ లో ఉన్నాను. ఆ మూవీ షూటింగ్ కాస్త లేట్ అయ్యింది. ఈ సినిమా మ్యూజిక్ సిట్టింగ్స్ కూడా జరుగుతుండేవి. దర్శకుడిగా నా నెక్ట్స్ మూవీ ఆలస్యమైనా ప్రొడక్షన్ మాత్రం కంటిన్యూ చేయాలని ఉండేది. అలా రవి దర్శకత్వంలో ఈ సినిమా స్టార్ట్ చేశాం.

– ప్రీమియర్స్ రోజు ప్రేక్షకుల రెస్పాన్స్ చూసి తేడా ఉంటే భయమేస్తుంది. కలర్ ఫొటో, బేబి, చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ చిత్రాలకు ప్రీమియర్స్ వేసినప్పుడు మేము ఎక్కడ ఆడియెన్స్ కు హై మూవ్ మెంట్ ఉంటుందని అనుకున్నామో అక్కడ వాళ్లు సైలైంట్ అయ్యారు, షాక్ లో ఉండిపోయారు. అలా మేము అనుకున్నది ఒకటి ఇక్కడ ఆడియెన్స్ నుంచి వచ్చిన రెస్పాన్స్ మరోలా ఉందని భయపడ్డాను. రెండు మూడు రోజుల తర్వాత ఆడియెన్స్ మూవీలోని కంటెంట్ కు అలవాటుపడతారు. దాదాపు రెండేళ్లు ఒక సినిమాకు కష్టపడతాను కాబట్టి ఏదైనా రిజల్ట్ తేడాగా వస్తే వెంటనే తీసుకోలేను. కొంచెం టైమ్ పడుతుంది.

– “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” సినిమాకు మొదటి రెండు రోజులు సోషల్ మీడియాలో నెగిటివ్ ప్రచారం జరిగింది. వాకౌట్ అనే ప్రచారం చేశారు. నిజంగా ప్రేక్షకులు వాకౌట్ చేస్తే 50 కోట్ల రూపాయల వసూళ్లు దక్కవు కదా. బేబి సినిమా చూశాక కొందరు వైష్ణవి క్యారెక్టర్ ను విమర్శించారు. విరాజ్ క్యారెక్టర్ లో క్లారిటీ లేదన్నారు. అలా విమర్శలు వచ్చాయి కానీ చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ విషయంలో కిరణ్ కు గానీ, గౌరి క్యారెక్టర్స్ విషయంలో ఎలాంటి నెగిటివ్ కామెంట్స్ రాలేదు. సినిమా షూటింగ్ కు మాత్రం ఎక్కువ రోజుల టైమ్ పట్టింది.

– షూటింగ్ టైమ్ లో ఈ మూవీలోని కొన్ని సీన్స్ చూశాక దర్శకుడిగా రవి పనిలో నేను ఏమాత్రం ఇన్వాల్వ్ కావాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు, మ్యూజిక్ వరకు మన ఎఫర్ట్స్ పెడితే  చాలు అనిపించింది. ఇంటర్వెల్ సీన్ చూశాక నాకంటే ఈ సినిమాను తను బాగా రూపొందించాడు అనే ఫీల్ కలిగింది. “చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ” సినిమాను కంఫర్ట్ గా రిలీజ్ చేసుకున్నాం. కలెక్షన్స్ నుంచి ప్రొడ్యూసర్స్ కు  డబ్బులు రావాలంటే కొంత టైమ్ పడుతుంది. ప్రస్తుతానికి పేపర్స్ పైన లెక్కలను చూస్తే మేము లాభాల్లోనే ఉన్నాం.

– కథపరంగా కలర్ ఫొటో, బేబి కంటే నాకు ఎక్కువ సంతృప్తినిచ్చిన చిత్రమిది. మనకు తెలిసి చాలా తక్కువ చిత్రాలు ఇలాంటివి వచ్చి ఉంటాయి. షాకింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ తో నేను రాసుకున్న కథను ఇంతమంది ప్రేక్షకులు ఓన్ చేసుకోవడం చాలా సంతోషాన్నిస్తోంది. మా సినిమాలో కొన్ని సీన్స్ చూస్తే మౌనరాగం చిత్రానికి ట్రిబ్యూట్ ఇచ్చామని మీకు అర్థమవుతుంది. నిజ జీవితాల్లోనుంచే ఇలాంటి కథలు వస్తుంటాయి. పర్సనల్ లైఫ్ లో బాధను అనుభవించినప్పుడే ఎమోషనల్ లవ్ స్టోరీస్ రాయగలం. నా లైఫ్ లోనూ పెయిన్ అనుభవించాను. అయితే నా లవ్ స్టోరీ సక్సెస్ అయ్యింది. కలర్ ఫొటో సినిమా అయితే చివరి 30 నిమిషాలు తప్ప సీన్ టు సీన్ నా ఇంటర్మీడియట్ లైఫ్ లో జరిగిందే. మరొక ప్రేమకథ ఉంది. అది తెరకెక్కించడం నా డ్రీమ్. అది పూర్తయ్యాక మరో జానర్ మూవీస్ చేస్తాను.

– ఎవరైనా కావాలని చేశారో లేదో తెలియదు గానీ మా సినిమాకు సోషల్ మీడియా నుంచి బాగా నెగిటివిటీ వచ్చింది. దాన్ని ఎదుర్కొని నిలబడేందుకు ప్రచారం ముమ్మరం చేశాం. సినిమాను అభినందినంచిన ప్రేక్షకుల రెస్పాన్స్ ను తిరిగి మేము సోషల్ మీడియాలో ప్రచారం చేశాం. అలా మేము పడిన కష్టం సక్సెస్ అయ్యింది. చివరకు నెగిటివిటీని ఎదుర్కోగలిగాం.

– నేను దర్శకుడిగా కెరీర్ బిగిన్ చేసినప్పుడు ఇండస్ట్రీలో ఉన్న ట్రెండ్ వేరు. కేవలం స్టార్స్, బ్యానర్ వ్యాల్యూ ఉన్న చిత్రాలకే ప్రేక్షకులు ఎక్కువ ఆసక్తి చూపించేవారు. కొత్త వాళ్ల మూవీస్ నిలబడటం కష్టంగా ఉండేది. అందుకే ఒక కాంట్రవర్సీ క్రియేట్ చేయాలి. అందరూ మాట్లాడుకునే టాపిక్ కావాలని హృదయకాలేయం చిత్రంతో నా కెరీర్ మొదలుపెట్టాను. ఇప్పుడున్నట్లు కంటెట్ ఓరియెంటెడ్ మూవీస్ కు ఆదరణ అప్పుడు ఉండి ఉంటే కలర్ ఫొటోతోనే నా జర్నీ బిగిన్ చేసేవాడిని. అప్పటికి నా దగ్గర కలర్ ఫొటో, బేబి స్టోరీ లైన్స్ ఉన్నాయి.

–  చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ సినిమా రిలీజ్ అయ్యాక ఎలాంటి ఛేంజెస్ చేయలేదు.దర్శకుడిగా నాకు కొంత గ్యాప్ వచ్చిన మాట నిజమే. అయితే బేబి హిందీ రీమేక్ వర్క్స్ లో బిజీగా ఉండిపోవడం వల్ల దర్శకుడిగా మరో సినిమా చేయట్లేదు. అయితే రైటర్ గా, ప్రొడ్యూసర్ గా సంతోషంగా, సంతృప్తిగా ఉన్నాను. నా కథను బాగా తీయగల దర్శకుడు ఉంటే అవకాశం ఇస్తాను. అందువల్ల నిర్మాతగా నేను కూడా బెనిఫిట్ పొందుతాను. నా కథ ఒక మంచి మూవీగా ప్రేక్షకుల దగ్గరకు వెళ్తుంది. ఈ చిత్రంలోని పాత్రకు భాగ్యరాజా గారిని అనుకున్నాం. ఆయనతో నేను ఫోన్ లో మాట్లాడాను. అయితే డేట్స్ క్లాష్ వల్ల ఆయన నటించలేకపోయారు. భాగ్యరాజా గారిని కలిసి ఉంటే బాగుండేది అనే ఫీల్ అయితే ఉంది.

– ఇళయరాజా, కీరవాణి, మణిశర్మ వంటి గొప్ప దర్శకులతో పనిచేయాలని అందరు దర్శకులకూ ఉంటుంది. నేను, మణిశర్మ గారు ఇళయరాజా గారి అభిమానులం. ఒక రోజంతా రాజా గారి పాటలు వింటూ అలాంటి మ్యూజిక్ మన మూవీకి చేద్దామని ఫిక్స్ అయ్యాం. ఇళయరాజా గారి పాటల మీద నాకున్న అవగాహనకు మణిశర్మ గారు సంతోషించారు.

– బేబి సినిమా దర్శకుడిగా నా అస్తిత్వానికి పరీక్ష. ఆ సినిమా సక్సెస్ లేకుంటే నేను లేను, చెన్నై లవ్ స్టోరీ సినిమా లేదు. బేబి మా అందరికీ మానసికంగా ఎంతో దగ్గరైన మూవీ. అప్పటికి ఉన్న పరిస్థితుల్లో సాయి రాజేష్ దర్శకత్వం చేయగలడా లేదా అనే సందేహాలను చెదరగొట్టింది.

– బేబి హిందీ రీమేక్ మరో 20 రోజులు  షూటింగ్ బ్యాలెన్స్ ఉంది. సెప్టెంబర్ చివరి కల్లా షూటింగ్ కంప్లీట్ చేస్తాం. తెలుగులో క్యారెక్టర్స్ సాఫ్ట్ గా ఉంటే హిందీ బేబిలో అగ్రెసివ్ గా ఉంటాయి. రైటర్ గా ఎమోషనల్ పెయిన్ తీసుకోవాలి. దర్శకుడిగా ఇంకా ఎక్కువ కష్టపడాలి. నాకు ఎస్ కేఎన్, ధీరజ్ లాంటి స్నేహితులు ఉన్నారు కాబట్టి ప్రొడక్షన్ సులువు అనుకుంటా. మా సినిమా బాక్సాఫీస్ వద్ద 50 కోట్ల మార్క్ టచ్ కావాలని ఆశించాం. మేము ఆశించినట్లే ప్రేక్షకులు మంచి వసూళ్లు ఇచ్చారు.

– మా సినిమా విజయం పట్ల సంతోషాన్ని వ్యక్తం చేస్తూ మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి గారు నాకు మెసేజ్ పంపారు. మరోసారి 50 కోట్ల గ్రాసర్ మూవీ చేశారని అభినందించారు. తన అభిమానులు ఇలాంటి మంచి విజయాలు సాధించడం గర్వంగా ఉందని మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి గారు మెసేజ్ చేయడం చాలా హ్యాపీగా అనిపించింది. అల్లు అర్జున్ గారు ఈ వారంలోనే మా మూవీ చూడబోతున్నారు. దర్శకుల సంఘానికి గతంలో వైస్ ప్రెసిడెంట్ గా చేశాను, ఇప్పుడు ట్రెజరర్ గా ఉన్నాను. ఇటీవల ఫిలిం ఫెడరేషన్ కు వైస్ ప్రెసిడెంట్ గా ఏకగ్రీవంగా నన్ను ఎన్నుకున్నారు. ఈ పదవులన్నింటినీ బాధ్యతగా భావిస్తున్నాను. కనీస వేతనాల విషయంలో ప్రొడ్యూసర్స్ నుంచి ఒప్పందాలు తీసుకొచ్చేందుకు ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాం. ఫెడరేషన్ వైస్ ప్రెసిడెంట్ గా ఉన్నాను కాబట్టి కార్మికుల పక్షాన్నే పనిచేస్తాను.

– నేను ముళ్లపూడి, యండమూరి వంటి రచయితలను అభిమానిస్తాను. బాలచందర్ గారి సినిమాల్లో ఉండే గ్రే క్యారెక్టర్స్ నన్ను ఎక్కువగా ఆకర్షిస్తుంటాయి. ఈ ఏడాది అక్టోబర్ తర్వాత నా దర్శకత్వంలో తెలుగు సినిమాను ప్రకటిస్తాను.
