Oka Pathakam Prakaram is commonly used in around 80% of crime genre stories –  Sai Ram Shankar 

Iconic director Puri Jagannadh’s younger brother and Tollywood hero Sai Ram Shankar is coming up with a new film titled “Oka Pathakam Prakaram.” This movie is directed by Malayalam filmmaker Vinod Kumar Vijayan and produced by Garlapati Ramesh and Vinod Kumar Vijayan. The film is set to release on February 7 and features Shruti Sodhi, Ashima Narwal, and Samuthirakani in key roles. Sai Ram Shankar will be seen in a character with multiple shades and the trailer promised the same. 

On the occasion of the film’s release, Sai Ram Shankar shared some interesting details in an exclusive interview. Here are the highlights of the same. 

If you can guess who the villain is by the interval, take ₹10,000 – Who came up with this idea? How has the response been? Did you consider any other plans?

Sai Ram Shankar: The response has been amazing. This has helped a lot in making the film’s name and release date known to the audience. From the beginning, this was our only plan. After watching the film, some key members of our unit suggested the tagline “If you can guess, take ₹10,000,” and we finalized it.

The title is ‘Oka Pathakam Prakaram’ What’s the justification behind it?

Sai Ram Shankar: The phrase ‘Oka Pathakam Prakaram’ is commonly used in around 80% of crime genre stories. In this film, every character has their own planning and strategy. That’s why we chose this title.

The director has already won an international award. How has his experience helped this film?

Sai Ram Shankar: He became a director at the age of 17. He has been my friend since my first movie. We have been planning to collaborate since 2005. He is a well-rounded technician with great knowledge. He has produced two films with Fahadh Faasil as a director-producer. Now, he wanted to make films in Telugu as well. We have a common friend, Vineeth, who brought us together for this project.

You worked with Samuthirakani. What did you learn from him?

Sai Ram Shankar: He is already a successful character artist and actor. He delivers exactly what the director wants.

Did Puri Jagannadh watch the trailer? What was his reaction?

Sai Ram Shankar: My brother watched the trailer and said it looked fresh. I also told him about the “₹10,000 challenge.”

What is your role in the film?

Sai Ram Shankar: The film is releasing in 50 centers. My character is a criminal lawyer. As the story unfolds, different shades of my character start to emerge. It will make the audience wonder, “Is he a criminal or just a criminal lawyer?” I even underwent one month of training and workshops for this role.

Does the film have scope for action?

Sai Ram Shankar: Though the director is from Malayalam cinema, he loves Telugu films and their style. He often says, In Malayalam cinema, we stick to one point and move forward, but here, that won’t work. It’s difficult. So, he has designed the fight scenes and songs in a way that suits Telugu audiences. Tamil stunt master Delhi Babu choreographed the action sequences.

Is the film purely crime-based, or does it have a love story as well?

Sai Ram Shankar: It’s a love story blended with a gripping crime narrative.

Any unforgettable experiences while shooting?

Sai Ram Shankar: For one of the climax sequences, we brought in 25 dogs. The sequence was shot over four days. At one point, a dog broke loose, and I had to climb onto a grill to escape. Luckily, I was safe. The fight sequence will be very intense. Initially, we shot a climax scene, but later, the director felt it wasn’t enough, so we extended it. We spent nearly seven to eight days shooting the climax alone.

After this film, will Sai Ram Shankar continue doing movies consistently?

Sai Ram Shankar: I have strong confidence in this film. Even though I faced failures in the past, producers are still willing to work with me. I believe this movie will be a success.

Will you continue as a hero, or are you open to other roles?

Sai Ram Shankar: I am open to any role as long as the character is good.

Recently, Hindi actors have been appearing more frequently in Telugu films, while Telugu actors are getting fewer opportunities. What’s your opinion?

Sai Ram Shankar: I already worked in ‘Neninthe.’ I got opportunities, but I couldn’t take them at that time.

How is this film different from your previous ones?

Sai Ram Shankar: I haven’t done an intense suspense thriller like this before. After a month of training, I was satisfied with my realistic performance.

Is the film releasing only in Telugu, or will it release in Malayalam as well?

Sai Ram Shankar: For now, only in Telugu. We are planning for other languages next. Cinematographer Rajeev is one of India’s top DOPs. Also, the director has given two super hit films in Malayalam and even learned Telugu for this project.

Your film ‘Oka Pathakam Prakaram’ is releasing on the same day as ‘Tandel.’ What are your thoughts?

Sai Ram Shankar: There’s no competition. We are not releasing along with ‘Tandel’; we are releasing next to ‘Tandel.’

What recent movies or web series have you enjoyed?

Sai Ram Shankar: ‘Drishyam.’ The story is so gripping that I can’t get it out of my mind.

With web series gaining huge popularity, are you planning to do one?

Sai Ram Shankar: Yes! I am working on a mythological web series. I play a 60-year-old character. Apart from that, I have a film titled ‘Resound’ and a few more projects in discussion.

‘విలన్ ఎవరో ఇంటర్వెల్ కు చెబితే రూ. 10,000 పట్టుకెళ్ళండి’, ‘పట్టుకుంటే 10 వేలు’ అంటున్నారు. అసలు ఈ ఐడియా ఎవరిది? రెస్పాన్స్ ఎలా ఉంది? దీనికి ముందు ఇంకేమైనా ఆలోచించారా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: రెస్పాన్స్ అయితే అద్భుతంగా ఉంది. సినిమా పేరు, రిలీజ్ అవుతుందన్న విషయం తెలియడానికి ఇది బాగా ఉపయోగపడింది. మొదటి నుంచి ఇదొక్కటే అనుకున్నాం. సినిమా చూశాక మా యూనిట్‌లో కీలక సభ్యులు ‘పట్టుకుంటే పదివేలు’ అని చెప్పడంతో దీన్నే ఫిక్స్ అయ్యాము. 

‘ఒక పథకం ప్రకారం’ అంటున్నారు… టైటిల్ జస్టిఫికేషన్ ఏంటి? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ‘ఒక పథకం ప్రకారం’ అంటే 80% క్రైమ్ జానర్ కథలకు వాడతాం. ఈ సినిమాలో ఉండే ప్రతి పాత్రకు ఎవరి ప్లానింగ్ వారికి ఉంటుంది. కాబట్టి ‘ఒక పథకం ప్రకారం’ అనే టైటిల్ సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకున్నాం. 

దర్శకుడికి ఇదివరకే ఇంటర్నేషనల్ అవార్డు వచ్చింది. ఆయన ఎక్స్‌పీరియన్స్ ఈ సినిమాకు ఎంత వరకు ఉపయోగపడుతుంది? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఆయన 17 ఏళ్లకే డైరెక్టర్ అయ్యారు. ఆయన నా ఫస్ట్ మూవీ తర్వాత నుంచి నా ఫ్రెండ్. మేం 2005 నుంచి ‘చేద్దాం చేద్దాం’ అనుకున్నాం. అన్నిటి మీద అవగాహన ఉన్న మంచి టెక్నీషియన్. ఆయన దర్శకనిర్మాతగా ఫాహద్ ఫాజిల్ తో రెండు సినిమాలు నిర్మించారు. తెలుగులో అలాగే దర్శక నిర్మాతగా సినిమాలు చేద్దామని చెప్పారు. మా ఇద్దరికీ ఉన్న కామన్ ఫ్రెండ్ వినీత్ ఉన్నారు. వీళ్లిద్దరూ కలిసి తెలుగులో చేద్దాం అనుకున్నపుడు నా పేరును అనుకున్నారు. 

సముద్రఖని గారితో వర్క్ చేశారు కదా. ఏం నేర్చుకున్నారు? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్ : ఆయన ఆల్రెడీ సక్సెస్ ఫుల్ క్యారెక్టర్ ఆర్టిస్ట్, నటుడు. డైరెక్టర్ కి ఏం కావాలో అదే చేస్తారాయన.

పూరి జగన్నాథ్ ట్రైలర్ చూశారా? ఆయన రియాక్షన్ ఏంటి ? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: అన్నయ్య ట్రైలర్ చూశారు. కొత్తగా ఉందని అన్నారు. అలాగే పట్టుకుంటే రూ. 10,000 గురించి కూడా చెప్పాను. 

ఈ సినిమాలో మీ పాత్ర ఏంటి? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: మూవీ 50 సెంటర్స్ లో రిలీజ్ అవుతుంది. ఇందులో నా పాత్ర క్రిమినల్ లాయర్. నెమ్మదిగా నా క్యారెక్టర్ లో ఒక్కో షేడ్ బయట పడుతుంది. క్రిమినలా లేకపోతే క్రిమినల్ లాయరా అనిపించేలా ఉంటుంది. అయితే ఈ సినిమాలో నా పాత్ర కోసం వన్ మంత్ ట్రైనింగ్, వర్క్ షాప్స్ కూడా చేశాను. 

సినిమాలో యాక్షన్ కి స్కోప్ ఉందా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఆయన మలయాళ డైరెక్టర్ అయినప్పటికీ తెలుగు సినిమాలు, ఇక్కడి స్టైల్ బాగా ఇష్టం. ‘మలయాళంలో ఓ పాయింట్ పట్టుకుని వెళ్ళిపోతారు. కానీ ఇక్కడ అలా కుదరదు, కష్టం’ అంటారు డైరెక్టర్ విజయన్. కాబట్టి తెలుగు ఆడియన్స్ తగ్గట్టుగా ఫైట్ సీన్స్ ని, సాంగ్స్ ను డిజైన్ చేశారు. తమిళ ఫైట్ మాస్టర్ ఢిల్లీ బాబు ఫైట్స్ డిజైన్ చేశారు.  

సినిమా అంతా క్రైమ్ జానర్ లో సాగుతుందా? లవ్ స్టోరీ కూడా ఉంటుందా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఇది లవ్ స్టోరీ బెస్ట్ క్రైమ్ మూవీ. 

షూటింగ్ చేసేటప్పుడు ఏదైనా మర్చిపోలేని అనుభవం? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: షూటింగ్ కోసం 25 డాగ్స్ తెచ్చాము. ఆ క్లైమాక్స్ సీక్వెన్స్ ఏకంగా 4 రోజులు చేశారు. ఆ టైంలో డాగ్ పైకి బయటకు రావడంతో, గ్రిల్ ఎక్కేశాను. లక్కీగా ఎస్కేప్ అయ్యాను. ఆ ఫైట్ చాలా బాగుంటుంది. ముందుగా ఒక క్లైమాక్స్ సీన్ తీసి, సరిపోట్లేదని మళ్లీ ఎక్స్టెండెడ్ వెర్షన్ తీశారు డైరెక్టర్. ఏడెనిమిది రోజులు క్లైమాక్స్ కోసమే షూటింగ్ చేశాం. 

ఈ మూవీ తర్వాత సాయి రామ్ శంకర్ కంటిన్యూగా సినిమాలు చేస్తారా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: నాకు ఈ సినిమా మీద గట్టి నమ్మకం ఉంది. మధ్యలో ఫెయిల్యూర్ వచ్చినప్పటికీ, నాతో సినిమాలు చేయడానికి నిర్మాతలు వస్తున్నారు. ఈ సినిమా సక్సెస్ అవుతుందని హోప్ ఉంది. 

హీరోగా నటిస్తారా? లేదంటే ఇతర క్యారెక్టర్స్ కూడా చేస్తారా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఏదైనా చేస్తాను. నా క్యారెక్టర్ బాగుంటే ఎలాంటి రోల్ అయినా చేస్తాను.

తెలుగు సినిమాల్లో హిందీ యాక్టర్స్ ఎక్కువగా ఉంటున్నారు. తెలుగు యాక్టర్స్ నటించడానికి ముందుకు రావట్లేదని అంటున్నారు. 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: నేను ఆల్రెడీ ‘నేనింతే’ సినిమాలో చేశాను. నాకూ అవకాశాలు వచ్చాయి. కానీ చేయడం కుదరలేదు. 

ఈ సినిమాకు, ఇంతకు ముందు చేసిన సినిమాలకు మధ్య తేడా ఏంటి? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: గతంలో ఇలాంటి ఇలాంటి సస్పెన్స్ జానర్ సినిమా, ఇంటెన్స్ ఉన్న క్యారెక్టర్ నేను చేయలేదు. నెల ట్రైనింగ్ తర్వాత రియాలిస్టిక్ గా చేశామన్న సంతృప్తి లభించింది. 

తెలుగులో మాత్రమే విడుదల చేస్తున్నారా? మలయాళంలో కూడా రిలీజ్ అవుతుందా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఇప్పటికి తెలుగులో మాత్రమే. నెక్స్ట్ ఇతర భాషల్లో ప్లాన్ చేస్తున్నారు. కెమెరామెన్ రాజీవ్ గారు ఇండియన్ టాప్ కెమెరామన్లలో ఒకరు. అలాగే మలయాళంలో రెండు సూపర్ హిట్ సినిమాలకు దర్శకత్వం వహించారు. తెలుగు కూడా నేర్చుకున్నారు. 

‘ఒక పథకం ప్రకారం’ విడుదల రోజు ‘తండేల్’ కూడా రిలీజ్ కాబోతోంది. మీరేం అనుకుంటున్నారు? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: పోటీ ఏముంది? మేము ‘తండేల్’తో పాటు రిలీజ్ చేయట్లేదు. ‘తండేల్’ పక్కన రిలీజ్ చేస్తున్నాం.

ఇటీవల కాలంలో వచ్చిన సినిమాలు లేదా వెబ్ సిరీస్‌లలో ఏదంటే ఇష్టం?

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్ : దృశ్యం. కథ చాలా బాగుంటుంది. మైండ్ లో నుంచి పోవట్లేదు. 

వెబ్ సిరీస్‌లకు బాగా డిమాండ్ పెరిగింది. మీరు ఏమన్నా చేస్తున్నారా? 

సాయి రామ్ శంకర్: ఓ మైథలాజికల్ సిరీస్ చేస్తున్నాం. అందులో 60 ఏళ్ల ఓల్డ్ రోల్ నాది. ఇప్పుడు చేస్తున్న సినిమాల లిస్ట్ లో ‘రీసౌండ్’ ఉంది. ఇంకొన్ని చర్చల దశలో ఉన్నాయి.
