If Theatres Are Not Given, Suicide Is My Only Refuge – Sheraz Mehdi
Sheraz Mehdi, the hero and filmmaker of ‘O Andala Rakshasi’, expressed deep anguish over the challenges faced by small-budget films in the Telugu film industry. Speaking at a press meet held at the Telugu Film Chamber, he alleged that a “mafia-like system” is systematically destroying small films by denying them access to theatres.
Mehdi stated that not only was his film denied theatres during its original release, but even its re-release failed to secure screening venues. “If theatres are not given, suicide is my only refuge,” he said emotionally, highlighting the severe difficulties faced by independent filmmakers.
He alleged that quality films are being deliberately sidelined and claimed that O Andala Rakshasi did not receive even a single theatre in the Nizam region. “This is happening strategically. Good films are being killed, and small films are being eliminated,” he remarked.
Mehdi further revealed that he is continuing his fight through legal channels and vowed to pursue justice until the issue is resolved. He pointed out that wider theatrical releases are essential for films to become eligible for OTT platform acquisitions, making theatre access crucial for a movie’s commercial survival.
Describing the situation of small films as “extremely unfortunate,” Mehdi said such conditions are rarely seen elsewhere in the world and are not prevalent even in Bollywood. He also criticized certain regulatory and financial burdens on filmmakers, including censorship-related requirements and charges such as ADCC fees, which he said place additional pressure on small producers.
The film’s team expressed concern that without adequate theatre access and equal opportunities, emerging talent and independent cinema would struggle to survive. They appealed to the government and industry leaders to protect small films and ensure a level playing field within the industry.
“The fight will continue until justice is done,” Mehdi asserted, calling for urgent reforms to support small and independent filmmakers in Telugu cinema.

తెలుగు సినిమా పరిశ్రమలో మాఫియా చిన్న సినిమాలను చంపేస్తోందని ‘ఓ అందాల రాక్షసి’ హీరో, మూవీ మేకర్ షెరాజ్ మెహదీ తీవ్ర ఆవేదన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. రిలీజ్ కే కాదు, రీ-రిలీజ్కు కూడా థియేటర్లు ఇవ్వలేదని ఇవ్వడం లేదని, థియేటర్స్ ఇవ్వకపోతే ఆత్మహత్య శరణ్యం అన్నారు. తెలుగు ఫిలిం చాంబర్లో నిర్వహించిన ప్రెస్మీట్లో మాట్లాడుతూ, “మంచి సినిమాలను కిల్ చేస్తున్నారు. చిన్న సినిమాలను చంపేస్తున్నారు. నైజాం ఏరియాలో ఒక్క థియేటర్ కూడా ఇవ్వలేదు. ఇది వ్యూహత్మకంగా జరుగుతోంది” అని షెరాజ్ మెహదీ అన్నారు. ఈ విషయంపై లీగల్గా పోరాటం కొనసాగుతోందని తెలిపారు.
చిన్న సినిమాల పరిస్థితి అత్యంత దారుణంగా ఉందని, “ప్రపంచంలో ఎక్కడా లేని పరిస్థితి మన ఇండస్ట్రీలో ఉంది. బాలీవుడ్లో కూడా ఇలా ఉండదు” అని వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. సెన్సార్ బోర్డు నిబంధనలు చిన్న సినిమాలకు భారంగా మారుతున్నాయని, ADCC వంటి చార్జీలు కూడా నిర్మాతలను కుంగదీస్తున్నాయని తెలిపారు.
చిన్న సినిమాలకు థియేటర్లు, సరైన అవకాశాలు కల్పించకపోతే కొత్త ప్రతిభ ఎదగడం కష్టమవుతుందని, చిత్రబృందం ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేసింది. చిన్న సినిమాలను కాపాడాలని, పరిశ్రమలో సమాన అవకాశాలు కల్పించాలని వారు ప్రభుత్వాన్ని, ఇండస్ట్రీ పెద్దలను కోరారు.
