Mayookha Will Impress Audiences as a Different Kind of Thriller – Director Shree Tej S.K

Mayookha is an upcoming thriller starring Payal Chengappa in the lead role. and directed by Shree Tej S.K. Interestingly, Srikanth Kandragula, who previously produced several interesting films under the Cinema Bandi Productions banner, has changed his screen name to Shree Tej S.K. and is making his directorial debut with this film. The film is produced by Sasidhar Nalla under the Prashvitha Entertai9ment banner

“Mayookha” is set for a grand worldwide theatrical release on the 9th of this month. Ahead of the release, director Shree Tej S.K. spoke about the film’s highlights in a recent interview.

On the film’s recognition at international film festivals:

“Our film Mayookha recently won the Best Mystery Movie award at the New York Film Festival and also received the Second Best award in the Thriller category. We never expected to receive this recognition. When we learned that our film had been selected for an award, the entire team was extremely happy. We have also applied for the Cannes Film Festival.

“If you look at our promotional content, you can notice storytelling and colour grading inspired by Korean and Hollywood films. The story is gradually revealed and reaches its peak by the second half. Today, audiences are watching a lot of thriller web series and films on OTT platforms. So, if we want to create content that appeals to them, we have to attempt something fresh and deliver it with quality. That is exactly what we tried to do with Mayookha.”

On Payal Chengappa:

“We initially narrated the story to actress Maheshwari, who is known for Gulabi. She listened to two stories we had and liked both of them. She eventually chose the other story. Payal has done some entertaining films in Kannada and we felt she would be a perfect fit for the character in our story. She has already reached Telugu audiences through her web series.

“We believed that audiences would relate strongly to her character in this film and connect with the struggles she goes through. Payal Chengappa has delivered a wonderful performance as Mayookha. I am confident that she will receive good recognition for her performance.”

On what makes the thriller different:

“Thrillers of this kind have been made before, but what makes our film different is the screenplay and the way the story has been presented on screen. The presentation is fresh and engaging. In fact, the recognition we received at the New York Film Festival as Best Thriller gave us confidence that our attempt had worked.

“If we hear that there are ghosts in some cemetery, our minds are already prepared for something frightening. But if an unknown person suddenly appears in a place where we live and spend our everyday lives, that creates a different kind of fear.

“Mayookha is not a horror film; it is a thriller. Why does an unknown person enter the heroine’s flat? What does he do? What is his relationship with the heroine? These questions drive the story and keep the audience engaged throughout. The film has a runtime of approximately two hours and ten minutes.”

On the title ‘Mayookha’:

“Mayookha means a ray of hope. By the time you reach the end of the film, you will understand why we chose the title Mayookha.

“The last short film I made was also titled Mayookha. I left for the US before completing that short film. Around that time, Rajamouli garu adopted a girl and named her Mayookha. Later, while I was continuing my professional career, I narrated this story to the producer, and he liked it and suggested that we make the film.

“No matter how good a story we write, it needs to be presented beautifully through visuals and sound to create an engaging cinematic experience. We took great care with both the visual and sound aspects of this film and have worked hard to deliver a quality product. Shibi Mathew Alex has composed excellent music for the film.”

On audience expectations from Indian thrillers:

“Our audiences watch Korean and Hollywood thrillers and often wonder why similar films are not being made here. I believe that if we give them a product of that quality and style, they will definitely appreciate it.

“With Mayookha, we are not just trying to give the audience an emotional experience; we want to give them a complete cinematic experience. Our producer Sasidhar Nalla gave us complete support throughout the making of the film.”

On his journey into filmmaking:

“I made short films almost twenty years ago. Later, I moved to the US, where I completed a directing course at the New York Film Academy. Direction has always been my priority. However, to gain experience in filmmaking, I also developed an understanding of production.

“We released films like Tantram and Sootravaakyam in Telugu. So far, we have made two films under our Cinema Bandi Productions banner, and a few more are currently in production. All of these projects have been made with new teams.

“If there are good stories, we will definitely support new talent. Whenever a film becomes a hit, several films in the same genre follow. But by the time we make a film in that genre, the trend may have already changed. I could have made a love story or a family entertainer, but I wanted to try something different, which is why I made Mayookha.

“I admire filmmakers such as Upendra, Ram Gopal Varma, Puri Jagannadh and Jonathan Nolan. My next directorial will be an emotional science-fiction film. It will be a clean U-certified movie.”

– మా మయూఖ సినిమాకు ఇటీవల న్యూయార్క్ ఫిలిం ఫెస్టివల్ లో బెస్ట్ మిస్టరీ మూవీగా అవార్డ్ వచ్చింది. థ్రిల్లర్ కేటగిరిలో సెకండ్ బెస్ట్ వచ్చింది. ఈ అవార్డ్ వస్తుందని మేము ఎక్స్ పెక్ట్ చేయలేదు. మా మూవీ అవార్డ్ కు సెలెక్ట్ అయ్యిందని తెలిసి టీమ్ అంతా హ్యాపీగా ఫీలయ్యాం. మేము కేన్స్ ఫిలిం ఫెస్టివల్ కు కూడా మా మూవీని అప్లై చేశాం. మీరు మా మూవీ ప్రమోషనల్ కంటెంట్ చూస్తే కొరియన్, హాలీవుడ్ మూవీ తరహా స్టోరీ టెల్లింగ్, కలర్ గ్రేడింగ్ కనిపిస్తుంటుంది. స్టోరి కొద్ది కొద్దిగా రివీల్ అవుతూ సెకండాఫ్ వచ్చేసరికి పీక్స్ కు వెళ్తుంది. ఇటీవల మన ప్రేక్షకులు ఓటీటీల్లో థ్రిల్లర్ వెబ్ సిరీస్ లు, సినిమాలు బాగా చూస్తూ వస్తున్నారు. సో వాళ్లకు నచ్చేలా మన కంటెంట్ ఉండాలంటే కొత్తగా, క్వాలిటీగా ప్రయత్నించాలి. మయూఖ చిత్రానికి మేము అలాంటి ప్రయత్నమే చేశాం.

– ఈ కథను మొదట నటి మహేశ్వరి (గులాబీ ఫేమ్) కి చెప్పాం. ఆమె మేము చెప్పిన రెండు కథలు విన్నారు. ఈ స్టోరీతో పాటు మరొక కథ ఆమెకు బాగా నచ్చింది. ఆ కథకు ఆమె లాక్ అయ్యారు. పాయల్ కన్నడలో మంచి ఎంటర్ టైనింగ్ మూవీస్ చేశారు. ఆమె మా కథలోని క్యారెక్టర్ కు బాగా సరిపోతారని అనిపించింది. ఆమె చేసిన వెబ్ సిరీస్ లతో ఇప్పటికే తెలుగు ఆడియెన్స్ కు రీచ్ అయ్యారు. ఈ కథలో ఆమె పాత్రను మన ఆడియెన్స్ బాగా రిలేట్ చేసుకుంటారు, ఆమె క్యారెక్టర్ పడే స్ట్రగుల్స్ కు రెస్పాండ్ అవుతారని నమ్మాం. మయూఖగా పాయల్ చెంగప్ప అద్భుతంగా పర్ ఫార్మ్ చేశారు. ఆమె నటనకు మంచి గుర్తింపు దక్కుతుంది.

– ఇలాంటి తరహా థ్రిల్లర్స్ గతంలో వచ్చినా మా మూవీలో స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, సినిమా స్టోరీని ప్రెజెంట్ చేసే విధానం కొత్తగా ఉండి ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. ప్రెజెంటేషన్ కొత్తగా ఉంది కాబట్టే న్యూయార్క్ ఫిలిం ఫెస్టివల్ లో బెస్ట్ థ్రిల్లర్ గా అవార్డ్ దక్కింది. ఇక్కడే మా ప్రయత్నం సక్సెస్ అయ్యిందనే నమ్మకం మొదలైంది. ఎక్కడో స్మశానంలో దెయ్యాలు ఉన్నాయంటే ముందే మనసు ప్రిపేర్ అవుతుంది కానీ మనం నివసించే చోట, రోజు ఉండే చోట ఎవరో అపరిచిత వ్యక్తి ఉన్నారంటే ఇంకా ఎక్కువ భయపడతాం.  మయూఖ హారర్ సినిమా కాదు థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీ. హీరోయిన్ ఉండే ఫ్లాట్ లోకి ఒక అపరిచిత వ్యక్తి ఎందుకు వచ్చాడు, అతను ఏం చేశాడు. హీరోయిన్ క్యారెక్టర్ తో అతనికి రిలేషన్ ఏంటి ..ఇలాంటి అంశాలతో కథ ఆద్యంతం ఆసక్తికరంగా సాగుతుంటుంది. మా సినిమా నిడివి 2 గంటల 10 నిమిషాలు ఉంటుంది.

– మయూఖ అంటే ఆశాకిరణం. మా సినిమా చూస్తూ చివరకు వచ్చేసరికి మీకు మా మూవీ టైటిల్ జస్టిఫై అవుతుంది. నేను రూపొందించిన చివరి షార్ట్ ఫిలిం పేరు మయూఖ. ఆ షార్ట్ ఫిలిం కంప్లీట్ చేయకుండానే యూఎస్ వెళ్లాను. అప్పుడు రాజమౌళి గారు ఒక పాపను దత్తత తీసుకుని ఆమెకు మయూఖ అనే పేరు పెట్టారు. నా ప్రొఫెషనల్ కెరీర్ లో కొనసాగుతున్న టైమ్ లో ప్రొడ్యూసర్ కు ఈ మయూఖ కథ చెబితే బాగుంది చేద్దామని అన్నారు. మనం ఎంత మంచి కథ రాసినా దాన్ని విజువల్ గా, ఆడియో పరంగా అందంగా తెరకెక్కించాలి అప్పుడే సినిమా ఇంట్రెస్ట్ క్రియేట్ చేస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమాకు విజువల్, సౌండ్ పరంగా చాలా జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకున్నాం. క్వాలిటీగా చేశాం. శిబి మాత్యూ అలెక్స్ మంచి మ్యూజిక్ ఇచ్చారు.

– మన ఆడియెన్స్ కొరియన్, హాలీవుడ్ థ్రిల్లర్స్ చూసి మన వాళ్లు ఇలా ఎందుకు తీయరు అనుకుంటూ ఉంటారు. మనం అలాంటి ప్రాడక్ట్ ఇస్తే తప్పకుండా ఆదరిస్తారని నమ్ముతున్నాం. మా సినిమాలో ఎమోషన్ కంటే ఎక్కువగా ఎక్సిపీరియన్స్ ప్రేక్షకులు ఇవ్వబోతున్నాం. సినిమా మేకింగ్ లో మా ప్రొడ్యూసర్ శశిధర్ నల్ల నుంచి కంప్లీట్ సపోర్ట్ లభించింది.

– నేను దాదాపు ఇరవై ఏళ్ల క్రితం షార్ట్ ఫిలింస్ రూపొందించాను. ఆ తర్వాత యూఎస్ వెళ్లాను అక్కడ న్యూయార్క్ ఫిలిం అకాడెమీలో డైరెక్షన్ కోర్స్ చేశాను. దర్శకత్వం అనేది ఎప్పుడూ నా ప్రయారిటీగా ఉండేది. అయితే సినిమా మేకింగ్ లో అనుభవం కోసం ప్రొడక్షన్ విషయాలపై కూడా అవగాహన పెంచుకున్నాను. తంత్రం, సూత్రవాక్యం అనే సినిమాలను తెలుగులో రిలీజ్ చేశాం. మా సినిమా బండి ప్రొడక్షన్స్ బ్యానర్ లో ఇప్పటిదాకా రెండు చిత్రాలు చేశాం. మరికొన్ని ప్రొడక్షన్ లో ఉన్నాయి. ఇవన్నీ కొత్త టీమ్ తో చేసినవే. మంచి కథలు ఉంటే తప్పకుండా న్యూ టాలెంట్ కు సపోర్ట్ చేస్తాం. ఒక సినిమా హిట్ అయితే అదే జానర్ లో మూవీస్ వస్తుంటాయి. మనం ఆ జానర్ లో మూవీ చేసేలోపు ట్రెండ్ మారిపోతుంది. నేను లవ్, ఫ్యామిలీ ఎంటర్ టైనర్ చేయొచ్చు. కానీ కొత్తగా ప్రయత్నిద్దామని  మయూఖ రూపొందించాను. ఉపేంద్ర, రామ్ గోపాల్ వర్మ, పూరి జగన్నాథ్, జొనాథన్ నోలన్ వంటి దర్శకులను ఇష్టపడతా. నెక్ట్స్ నా దర్శకత్వంలో ఒక ఎమోషనల్ సైన్స్ ఫిక్షన్ మూవీ చేయబోతున్నా. అది క్లీన్ యు సర్టిఫికెట్ సినిమా అవుతుంది.
