Star Heroes Must Speak Up on Issues Facing Small Films – Actor-Director Sheraz Mehdi 

Actor-director Sheraz Mehdi has alleged that a major conspiracy is being carried out against small-budget films in the Telugu film industry, claiming that it has now turned into a “mafia.” Expressing his anguish over the difficulties faced during the release and re-release of his film O Andala Rakshasi, Sheraz addressed the media at the Telangana Film Chamber after he was allegedly denied permission to hold a press conference at the Telugu Film Chamber.

Sheraz claimed that the Telugu Film Chamber refused to provide him a platform because they feared he would expose the industry’s internal problems.

“Whenever I speak about the issues in the industry, they fear I will reveal the truth about them. That is why I was denied permission to conduct a press meet at the Telugu Film Chamber,” he alleged.

Questioning the discrimination, Sheraz said that if even Hyderabad locals are not given an opportunity there, then who actually deserves it.

He further stated that everyone in the Telugu Film Chamber—from the peon to the president—is aware of the industry’s problems, but none of them has the authority to act.

“They have all become mere puppets. Compassion has disappeared from the Chamber, and arrogance has taken its place,” he remarked.

Small Films Facing Severe Discrimination
Sheraz alleged that small-budget films are being subjected to discrimination in every aspect, including theatrical releases, OTT platforms, audio rights, satellite rights, and dubbed-language rights.

Recalling his own experience, he said:

“I was promised 20 theatres in the city, but eventually I was given only five. That is why I had to cancel the original release.”

He also criticized the Producers Council’s voting eligibility rules, which require a producer to have released at least three films and secured releases in 25 screens before becoming eligible to vote.

Calling the rule “completely unjust,” Sheraz argued that every person who pays the membership fee and becomes a producer should have equal voting rights—even if their film is released in just one theatre.

He also objected to the Film Club’s membership fee of ₹10 lakh, saying it prevents small producers from entering the system. He demanded that the fee be reduced to ₹1 lakh.

Legal Notices Sent to Theatre Chains
Sheraz revealed that legal notices have already been served to Asian Theatres’ Suniel, as well as PVR and INOX, alleging discrimination against small films in theatre allocation.

He expressed disappointment that even senior industry personalities like Bharat Bhushan were unable to resolve these issues.

“Because of these egos, small films are dying,” he said.
Star Heroes Must Protect Their Own Industry
Sheraz made strong remarks directed at the Telugu film industry’s leading stars.

He acknowledged that Megastar Chiranjeevi had earlier expressed support for small films and said he continues to respect him. However, he insisted that becoming a superstar is not just about delivering successful films but also about addressing the industry’s internal challenges.

He also criticized the culture of making journalists wait for hours during press meets.

Addressing the industry’s biggest stars, he said:
“Whether it is Balakrishna, Super Star, Megastar, Power Star or Stylish Star, I have only one request. Along with the charitable activities you do outside, please pay attention to the problems within our own Telugu film industry first.”

Sheraz warned that the challenges currently affecting small-budget films could eventually impact big-star films as well.

Fight Will Continue; Massive Re-Release Planned
Sheraz asserted that hundreds of people are already supporting his movement and expressed confidence that the number will soon grow into thousands.

He declared that he would never back down, whether the battle is legal or otherwise.

Describing O Andala Rakshasi as “a mind-blowing film with outstanding content,” Sheraz said audiences would remain glued to their seats throughout the movie.

He concluded by announcing that once adequate theatres, OTT rights, audio rights and other distribution arrangements are secured, O Andala Rakshasi will be re-released on a much bigger scale.

“నేను ఇండస్ట్రీ సమస్యలపై మాట్లాడుతుంటే, తెలుగు ఫిల్మ్ చాంబర్ లోపల కూర్చొని తమ గురించే మాట్లాడతాననే భయంతో నాకు అక్కడ ప్రెస్ మీట్ ఇవ్వడానికి నిరాకరించారు” అని షెరాజ్ మెహదీ ఆరోపించారు. హైదరాబాద్ లోకల్స్ అయిన మనకే అక్కడ అర్హత లేకపోతే ఇంకెవరికి ఉంటుందని ఆయన ప్రశ్నించారు. తెలుగు ఫిల్మ్ చాంబర్‌లో ప్యూన్ నుండి ప్రెసిడెంట్ వరకు అందరికీ సమస్యలు తెలుసని, కానీ అక్కడ పనిచేసే వారికి ఎలాంటి పవర్స్ లేవని, వారంతా కేవలం బొమ్మల్లా మారిపోయారని విమర్శించారు. చాంబర్ పెద్దల్లో మమకారం పోయి అహంకారం పెరిగిపోయిందని మండిపడ్డారు.

చిన్న బడ్జెట్ సినిమాలకు థియేటర్లు, ఓటీటీ, ఆడియో రైట్స్, శాటిలైట్, ఇతర భాషల రైట్స్ విషయంలో తీవ్ర అన్యాయం జరుగుతోందని షెరాజ్ పేర్కొన్నారు. “సిటీలో 20 థియేటర్లు ఇస్తామని చెప్పి తీరా చూస్తే నాకు కేవలం 5 థియేటర్లు మాత్రమే కేటాయించారు. అందుకే ఆనాడు రిలీజ్ క్యాన్సిల్ చేశాను” అని చెప్పారు. అలాగే ప్రొడ్యూసర్ కౌన్సిల్‌లో ఓటు హక్కు కావాలంటే కనీసం మూడు సినిమాలు రిలీజ్ అయి ఉండాలని, 25 స్క్రీన్స్ ఉండాలనే నిబంధన పెట్టడం దారుణమన్నారు. డబ్బులు కట్టి మెంబర్‌షిప్ తీసుకున్న ప్రతి ఒక్కడూ ప్రొడ్యూసరేనని, ఒక థియేటర్ లో వేసినా అతనికి ఓటు హక్కు కల్పించేలా రూల్స్ మారాలని డిమాండ్ చేశారు. అదేవిధంగా, ఫిల్మ్ క్లబ్‌లో చిన్న నిర్మాతలు అడుగుపెట్టకుండా ఏకంగా రూ. 10 లక్షల మెంబర్‌షిప్ ఫీజు పెట్టడాన్ని ఆయన తప్పుబట్టారు, దీనిని రూ. 1 లక్షకు తగ్గించాలని కోరారు.

థియేటర్ల యాజమాన్యాలకు లీగల్ నోటీసులు
చిన్న సినిమాలకు థియేటర్లు ఇవ్వకుండా అన్యాయం చేస్తున్న ఏషియన్ థియేటర్స్ సునీల్ గారితో పాటు పీవీఆర్, ఐనాక్స్ యాజమాన్యాలకు తాము ఇప్పటికే లీగల్ నోటీసులు పంపినట్లు షెరాజ్ మెహదీ వెల్లడించారు. ఇండస్ట్రీ పెద్దలైన భరత్ భూషణ్ లాంటి వారు కూడా ఈ విషయంలో ఏమీ చేయలేకపోయారని, ఈ ఈగోల వల్ల చిన్న సినిమాలు చచ్చిపోతున్నాయని ఆవేదన వ్యక్తం చేశారు.

స్టార్ హీరోలు ఇంట్లోని సమస్యలు పట్టించుకోవాలి!
పరిశ్రమలో ఉన్న స్టార్ హీరోలందరిపై షెరాజ్ ఆసక్తికర వ్యాఖ్యలు చేశారు. “మెగాస్టార్ చిరంజీవి గారు చిన్న సినిమాలకు సపోర్ట్ ఇస్తానని చెప్పారు, ఆయనపై ఎప్పుడూ గౌరవం ఉంటుంది. కానీ ఇండస్ట్రీలో ఒక స్టార్‌గా ఎదగాలంటే కేవలం సినిమాలు చేయడం కాదు, ఇక్కడి సమస్యలను కూడా చూడాలి. ప్రెస్ మీట్ల కోసం మీడియా మిత్రులు గంటల తరబడి వేచి చూసే సంస్కృతి మారాలి. టాలీవుడ్‌లో ఉన్న బాలకృష్ణ, సూపర్ స్టార్, మెగాస్టార్, పవర్ స్టార్, స్టైలిష్ స్టార్ లందరికీ నేను ఒకటే చెప్తున్నా.. మీరు బయట చేసే పుణ్యకార్యాలు మాత్రమే కాదు, ముందు మన ఇల్లు అయిన తెలుగు చిత్ర పరిశ్రమలోని సమస్యలను పట్టించుకోండి” అని పిలుపునిచ్చారు. ఇవాళ చిన్న సినిమాలకు వస్తున్న సమస్యలు రేపు పొద్దున స్టార్ హీరోల సినిమాలకు కూడా వస్తాయని హెచ్చరించారు.

‘ఓ అందాల రాక్షసి’ భారీ రీ-రిలీజ్
తాను చేస్తున్న ఈ పోరాటానికి వెనుక వందలాది మంది మద్దతుగా నిలుస్తున్నారని, ఇవాళ వందల్లో ఉన్న ఈ సంఖ్య రేపు వేలల్లోకి మారుతుందని షెరాజ్ స్పష్టం చేశారు. తానేమీ పిరికివాడిని కాదని, లీగల్ ఫైట్ అయినా, యుద్ధం అయినా వెనకడుగు వేసే ప్రసక్తే లేదన్నారు. ‘ఓ అందాల రాక్షసి’ చిత్రం ఒక మైండ్ బ్లోయింగ్ కంటెంట్ ఉన్న సినిమా అని, ప్రేక్షకులు థియేటర్లో ఒక్క నిమిషం కూడా కదలకుండా చూసే అద్భుతమైన సినిమా అని పేర్కొన్నారు. ఈ చిత్రానికి తగినన్ని థియేటర్లు, ఓటీటీ, ఆడియో రైట్స్ సాధించుకుని అతి త్వరలోనే అత్యంత భారీ స్థాయిలో రీ-రిలీజ్ చేయబోతున్నట్లు షెరాజ్ మెహదీ ధీమా వ్యక్తం చేశారు.
