Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer Trailer Promises a Grand Visual Spectacle Rooted in Myth and Magic

Mollywood seems ready to step onto a bigger stage with Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer, an ambitious period fantasy that aims to push the boundaries of Indian cinema. Directed by Rojin Thomas, best known for #Home, the film features Jayasurya in the role of Kadamattathu Kathanar the legendary priest from Kerala whose stories are steeped in myth, magic, and folklore.

The recently released trailer, a little over three minutes long, gives a clear sense of the film’s scale. It begins with the historic setting of Kanthalloor Saala and slowly moves into a darker, more atmospheric world set in ancient Venad. As a supernatural threat looms over the land, Kathanar emerges as its protector, setting up a narrative that blends legend with spectacle.

Anushka Shetty’s presence adds further weight to the project, marking her Malayalam debut. She plays Kalliyankattu Neeli, a Yakshi whose haunting presence brings both mystery and tension to the story, standing in sharp contrast to Kathanar’s spiritual strength.

The film is backed by producer Gokulam Gopalan under the Sree Gokulam Movies banner and is mounted on a scale rarely attempted in Malayalam cinema. The supporting cast includes Prabhu Deva, Sanoop Santhosh, Sandy, Devika Sanjay, Harish Uthaman, Vineeth, Nitish Bharadwaj, Srikanth Murali, and Kulprit Yadav.

Rojin Thomas has co-written the screenplay with R. Ramanand, while Neil D’Cunha handles cinematography and Rahul Subrahmanian composes the music. The film makes extensive use of virtual production and VFX, aiming for a visual standard that matches international projects. Production design by Rajeevan adds depth and authenticity to its world.

In line with its scale, Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer is planned for a wide monsoon release and will be dubbed in 15 languages, including Malayalam, English, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Chinese, French, Korean, Italian, Russian, Indonesian, Japanese, and German. With its mix of folklore, scale, and technical ambition, Kathanar is shaping up to be one of the most interesting films to come out of Malayalam cinema in recent years.
